The Cheval Blanc, or white horse, is a tall mountain peak rising high above the Tre-les-Eaux valley along the ridge line that runs to the summit of Mont Buet. On its north-eastern side it towers high above Lac Vieux Emosson and Lac Emosson. The summit of the Cheval Blanc lies right across the border in Switzerland the trail marker is provided by the Swiss authorities.
The Cheval Blanc summit has a single trail running across it. The south-western side of that trail follows the flattish ridgeline coming from the Mont-Buet summit. This trail is spectacular with great distant views on both sides of the ridge including good distant views of Mont Blanc. On the northern side you will have wide views into the Giffre Valley and far beyond. The trail running up to the summit of the Cheval Blanc comes from its southern side with a steep ascend supported by ropes and footholds. This trail continues on to Col des Corbeux.
We have two detailed trail descriptions for a climb of Mont Buet summit from its northern approach. Both of these pass through the Cheval Blanc. The first one is Mont Buet via Loriaz and the Cheval Blanc. The second one is Mont Buet via de Tre-les-Eaux valley.
