Loop

This trail starts at Vieux Servoz with its amazing old farm houses, mazottes, well maintained gardens and Mont Blanc providing a fantastic dramatic backdrop for it all. The trail climbs up to through beautiful farm lands until it enters the forest. It then continues upwards on nice forest trails as we make our way to the first two small lakes that form the Trois Gouilles. The third lake is the largest and from there its a nice steady downhill over a hil crest down and back to Vieux Servoz.

This trail is one of our favorites for autumn. The forest consists of deciduous trees and it is one of the few locations around Chamonix where you can expect incredible autumn colors and thick carpets of leaves. If you fancy a longer walk then you can easily extend this trail with a visit to Lac Vert which is absolutely spectacular in autumn.

Trail Directions & Safety Considerations

Risk Considerations for this Trail

Risk Considerations & Difficulty Assessment

This route reaches an altitude of 1071 meters and should generally be snow free from the end of March till the end of October. In winter, the Trois Gouilles trail is also a well-known winter hiking and snow shoeing route marked by purple trail markers but you should then bring the proper gear for it. The route itself is not technical but it does have quite steep sections. There also seems to always be a lot of wet ground on the trails and it can get quite muddy. Navigating this route is not difficult and even if you do get on the wrong trail then you are unlikely to get into big trouble. There are plenty of trail markers except for the end part of our version of this trail.

Trail Starting Point

Trail Starting Point

The trail starts in the center of Vieux Servoz on an intersection with the Oratoire Vieux Servoz and a water fountain. If you are coming by car then the Parking de Sainte-Croix is a better starting point or you can park near the Eglise Sainte Loup on the east side of Servoz. You can come by train but the train station is a 15-20 minute walk away on the southern side of Servoz.

Trail Directions

Trail Directions

We start the trail in the center of Vieux Servoz on the intersection where you can find one of our favorite oratories: the Oratoire Vieux Servoz. From there we head north on the Chemin des Fours a Pain till we reach the start of the trail. Follow the trail marker for Lac Vert. After the first climb and crossing the farmlands you will see a trail marker for the Gouille Noire, the first of the three small lakes that we will visit. Climb up in a northern direction till you reach the Gouille Noire. Pass the little lake on its eastern shore and continue on north to the second little lake, the Gouille du Be. From there continue north and climb up to a junction where you can take a left. Should you miss this junction then you will simply reach a 4x4 track where you can then turn left and end up on the same path going to the third little lake. Continue east till you reach a trail marker for the Gouille de Pre Guy which will turn left, southwards and downhill. Pass the lake on its eastern bank and you will reach a very run down wooden bridge. This path is more scenic and adventurous but if the bridge seems too rickety then use the path on the western bank instead. There is a cute little clearing in the forest on the western side of the lake with a campfire spot and a little hut. From there turn west and rejoin the trail going south and downhill. Follow this trail which stays on a crest and has a little river running next to it for the first few hundred meters. The following segment can be a bit hard to follow and its generally lacks trail markers. From the long stretch going downhill you will eventually end up on a junction. Keep going in a south-eastern direction until you reach a bridge with a small waterfall on your left hand side. Take the trail on your left as it climbs up from the little river. Keep going south until you reach a junction near the Parking the Saint Croix and the big road. Don't head in that direction but instead turn south-east. This trail continues on until it reaches the outskirts of Vieux Servoz and the Impasse du Fayard. Follow this road as it passes by some spectacular chalets. Follow the road as it turns downhill and to the south. Stay on the Rue du Vieux Servoz until you are back at our starting point.
