The Cheminee des Fees Saint-Gervais is a unique rock formation located east from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, roughly 1 kilometer west from the hamlet of Montfort. The literal translation of "Cheminee des Fees" is Fairy Chimney. It is specific rock formation which can occur anywhere in the world where a hard stone rests on top of much softer stone. The softer stone below the harder stone experiences a lot less erosion than the surrounding stone that has no protection. With the passing of long periods of time, the end result is a hard stone sitting on top of a long column of softer stone. It looks pretty dramatic. In English this type of unique rock formation goes under the name of hoodoo, tent rock, fairy chimney or earth pyramid.
The Cheminee des Fees Saint-Gervais is located in a beautifull location with steep cliffs surrounding the actual tent rock. We got a detailed trail description for a beautiful Saint-Gervais discovery trail which also includes a visit to the Cheminee des Fees.
