The Cheminee des Fees Saint-Gervais is a unique rock formation located east from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, roughly 1 kilometer west from the hamlet of Montfort. The literal translation of "Cheminee des Fees" is Fairy Chimney. It is specific rock formation which can occur anywhere in the world where a hard stone rests on top of much softer stone. The softer stone below the harder stone experiences a lot less erosion than the surrounding stone that has no protection. With the passing of long periods of time, the end result is a hard stone sitting on top of a long column of softer stone. It looks pretty dramatic. In English this type of unique rock formation goes under the name of hoodoo, tent rock, fairy chimney or earth pyramid.
