Loop
This is a long and strenuous trail that combines all the best peaks, views and points of interests on both sides of the Vallorcine Valley. It includes the Cascade de Berard waterfall, the Alpage and Refuge de Loriaz, the town of Vallorcine, the Saix Blanc view point, the Tete de Balme summit and the Aiguillette des Posettes crest trail and summit. As a one day effort his one might be more suitable for trail runners. For hikers, it is very easy to divide this route into two parts by doing Berard and Loriaz and ending in Vallorcine on day one. On day two you can then start at Vallorcine and take on the second half. The trail offers great fueling options along the way with the Buvette at the Berard waterfall, the Refuge de Loriaz on the first peak, multiple restaurants and snack options in Vallorcine, the Alpage the Balm between the Tete de Balme and the Aiguillette des Posettes and then finally the perfect late afternoon celebratory beer at the Auberge la Boerne by adding a small detour.

Trail Directions & Safety Considerations

Risk Considerations & Difficulty Assessment
This route reaches an altitude of 2330 at the Arolette summit. The trail leading up to the Arolette and the north face of the Tete de Balme will likely have snow cover until at least the middle or end of June. The trail leading up to the Arollete is quite steep and exposed and should not be attempted with heavy snow cover. Also pay attention for the possible snow overhangs (corniches) that could be above you as your approach the Arolette junction. Check with the local mountain office ahead of time.
The trails themselves are not overly technical but the paths are often steep and there are long sections of steep ascend. At higher altitudes, you can expect a lot of rocky terrain. The crest trail to and from the Aiguillette des Possettes has sharp rock edges and the descend from the Aiguillette des Posettes is steep with some big steps down.
This trail is not overly hard to navigate but if your goal is to follow the exact route as we describe it here then we heavily recommend using a GPS enabled device and uploading the GPX file. There are many junctions we take which are not clearly marked and could be easy to miss.

Trail Starting Point
The trail starts at the parking in between Tre-les-Champ and the Col des Montets. There are multiple parking bays along this road including the one right after Tre-les-Champs and a much larger parking at the Col des Montets. If you are coming by train then your best option is the Montroc train station or, alternatively, you could take the train all the way to Vallorcine and tackle the second half of this trail first.

Trail Directions
The trail starts at the parking between Tre-les-Chams and the Col des Montets. From there we head north to the Col des Montets. We cross the road to the visitor center and take the trail that runs on the northern side of the visitor center. Keep heading north until you reach a small parking lot with an information sign. Turn left and take the 4x4 track in a north-western direction. After crossing the La Poya ski slope you can take the track forking off to the right which will take you to the hamlet of La Poya. If you are not interested in visiting La Poya then you can stick to the 4x4 track which will then take you straight to the Cascade de Berard waterfall. If you did visit La Poya then take a left turn uphill before the wooden cross and follow the signs for the Cascade de Berard. Once at the waterfall you can stick to the right side to reach the metal stairs and platform with a nice viewing deck for the waterfall. Then climb up to reach the buvette which lies right across the water. After admiring the waterfall, continue on in a wester direction and follow the signs for the Refuge de la Pierre a Berard. Folow this trail until you reach a junction with a bridge on your right side. Go over the bridge and follow the trail that runs uphill back along the river in a north-eastern direction. You will reach an opening with a chalet and a water fountain. Take the trail to your left in a north western direction. Skip the first junction and take the second junction in the direction of Les Granges. Pass through the hamlet and keep going in a north-eastern direction. The trail will intersect with the 4x4 track that serves the Refuge Loriaz. At the next switch back, keep going in the same direction and follow the signs for Loriaz. The trail will zigzag all the way up to the refuge. After visiting the reguge take the same trail down until you reach the junction and take the left fork that takes you in eastern direction down the mountain. Follow this trail and signs for La Villaz. Once you reach La Villaz stay on the main village road in an eastern direction and follow the road down the mountain at the first switchback. This road will lead you to the Eglise Notre Dame church in Vallorcine. From the church we follow a part of the beautiful Chemin des Diligences in a south-western direction. There will be multiple forks that you can take down the hill to the center of Vallorcine. We suggest you stay on the chemin des dilligences until you reach the route du crot. There you can take a left and head down the hill. Take a right at the Route de l'Eglise and pass the tourist office. Continue on the main road until you pass the townhall, take a right and head to the train station of Vallorcine. We pass the train station and cross the railroad line on the right side. We take a left and take the trail up the hill right across from the Le Comptoir restaurant. At the top of the trail we intersect with the balcon trail and we turn left. Keep following the trail as it climbs up the mountain and follow signs for the Saix Blanc. The Saix blanc viewpoint can be easy to miss. It lies on a little side path of the main trail so keep your eyes open for it. After the Saix Blanc stay on the trail as it swings to the right. After one more switchback it ends up on the ski run. Stay to the right and head in a southern direction. Keep your eyes open and take the first turn to the left on the track that leads uphill in a north-eastern direction. Stay on this trail as it intersects with another ski slope. Pay attention here as the trail you need to be on lies to the left side of the metal protective barriers. It can be easy to miss. Stay on this trail as it continues on and traverses around the mountain in a north-eastern direction. You wil cross a stream, turn the corner and start the steep ascent towards the Alpage de Catogne. At Catogne there is a 3-way junction. Take the trail heading in an eastern direction towards L'Arolette and the Tete de Balme. After a steep climb you will reach a saddle with a 4 way junction. Take the trail going west towards the nearby Arollete summit. Pass the Arolette and follow the trail down and up to the Tete de Balme summit. From there take the trail heading in a western direction downhill and pass the next border marker stone. Head downhill passed the lift station and take the trail that runs to the right of the little wooden building. Follow this trail as it zigzags down the mountain towards de Col des Posettes. If you want a break and if it is open, then this is a good opportunity to refuel at the Alpage de Balme. Your nest destination is the Aiguillette des Posettes which is the crest trail to the west of the Col des Posettes. Follow the crest trail to the summit and then continue on this same trail downhill on the south-western face of the mountain. Stick on the trail as it runs in a southern direction until it reaches a junction. Take the right trail here in a southern direction. Ignore the two next junctions and keep going in a south-western direction down the mountain. At the next junction, take the trail on your right in a western direction towards the Col des Montets. This trail will bring you to the trail that runs next to the main road. Follow that trail north back to the parking and the starting point of this trail.
