L'Arolette is a grassy summit near the Tete de Balme on the far nothern end of the Chamonix Valley. The summit is marked by a big wooden cross with the text 2001 and ARFLEEV. We have no idea what the text refers to but we would love to find out. The cross at L'Arolette is very near the Croix de Fer, a beautiful iron cross at a slightly higher altitude and beautifully perched on a crest facing Martigny. L'Arolette provides unobstructed 360 degree views in all directions. It sits at an altitude of 2330 meters which means that will most likely have snow cover from the middle of October to the start of July. This can vary greatly per year so please make sure to check trail conditions ahead of time.

The easiest way to visit L'Arolette is by taking the Charamillon gondola from Le Tour and then the Autannes chair lift. From there its a short hike to L'Arolette passing by the Refuge Col de Balme on the way. We got a lovely loop trail that visits the Croix de Fer and the Alpage de Catogne. A slight detour would enable a visit to L'Arollette.
