Les Houches is a town located on the western side of the Chamonix Valley at the foot of the Mont Blanc Massif. Les Houches is one of the larger towns in the valley with multiple hotels, restaurants, super markets, bakeries and two lift stations servicing the Les Houches ski area. Les Houches has roughly 3000 inhabitants. The commune of Les Houches covers quite a big area on the western end of the valley and includes Taconnaz, Les Granges, Les Chavants and the pictoresque hamlet of Vaudagne on its north western end.
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the main church of Les Houches located in the heart of the town. The townhall of Les Houches is right in front of the church entrance. On the street across from the church you will find the post office and the Musee Montagnard des Houches, a mountain museum. There are also a couple of restaurants and shops around the this little town center. The tourist information office of Les Houches is also nearby.
Les Houches make a great basecamp for climbing Mont Blanc with the lift station connecting to the Tramway du Mont Blanc which then proceeds all the way up to the Nid d'Aigle. This make the climb to Mont Blanc significantly shorter. Mont Lachat above Les Houches is a more manageable summit above Les Houches and we have a family friendly trail for reaching this lower summit. Other highlights around Les Houches include the Animal Park Merlet with a bus departing from the Les Houches train station. We also have a nice trail that starts at Lac Chavants and takes you to the very nice hamlet of Vaudagne. Across from Les Houches, on the other side of the Arve river, you will be able to see the Christ Roi statue.
The Saint-Gervais-les-Bains to Vallorcine train line which runs through the entire Chamonix Valley makes a stop at the Les Houches train station. The train station is located on the other side of the Arve river so it is definitely a bit of a walk up from the train station to the town center but you can also take the bus. There are multiple stops serving Les Houches and running through the valley.
